This course examines the historical development of American theater from the colonial period to modern times. It examines the major themes that have characterized particular periods (the search for self, the collapse of the American dream, the problems of African-Americans, etc.), the specific styles and genres used by playwrights, and the most prominent playwrights.

This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of the historical development of the American theater, the issues addressed in the works produced in this process, and the methods and techniques used by playwrights.
1. To have sufficient knowledge about the basic characteristics, roots and developmental stages of American theater at the undergraduate level.
2. To be able to produce analytical approaches to important plays of American theater.
3. To be able to identify specific features of the basic dramatic dynamics in American theater plays.
4. To learn the characteristics of the social and historical background that paved the way for playwrights to produce their plays.
