Gain practical knowledge and skills regarding point-to-point communication systems.
1. To reinforce the theoretical knowledge that students have learned in ELE 361.
2. To gain practical knowledge on the generation and mode resolution of amplitude and frequency modulated signals
3. To gain practical experience on sampling, digital modulation techniques and estimation in noisy environments.
4. To gain experience on Software Defined Radios (SDR), GNU Radio and other general purpose SDR software.
5. To carry out laboratory studies by sharing the work with a teammate and to present them in a report in accordance with ethical rules
Week 1: Introduction to Communication Systems and YTR
Week 2: Experiment 1: Fundamentals of Digital Signal Processing with GNU Radio (Sampling, Filtering, Aliasing)
Week 3: Experiment 2: Fundamentals of Digital Signal Processing with GNU Radio (Dilution, Intersampling), Digital Audio Processing examples (Stereo and DTMF)
Week 4: Experiment 3: Introduction to Python Programming, numpy and scipy libraries
Week 5: Experiment 4: Using YTR Hardware (RTL-SDR)
Week 6: Experiment 5: IQ Data Formats, AM Mode Decoding, HF and Air Bands
Week 7: Experiment 6: NBFM Mode Decoding, VHF Band, FM Repeaters, CTCSS
Week 8: Experiment 7: WBFM Mode Decoding, Mono/Stereo, Pilot Tone, RDS Components
Week 9: Experiment 8: Introduction to Digital Communication, QPSK Simulation in Noisy Environment, Carrier and Sampling Time Synchronization
