Course Description
Drawing I is a studio course in which students observe and perceive various objects, natural elements, and the human figure, reflecting their observations through drawings. In this course, after researching the elements that constitute drawing, students engage in studies on line, line value, placement, sketching, proportion and scale, perspective, positive-negative space, balance, and modeling. Emphasis is placed on students' understanding of drawing tools and materials, as well as the terminology of the drawing course. Additionally, a theoretical foundation related to drawing is established through various visual and written sources.
Textbook and / or References
1. Jeno Barcsay - Anatomy for the Artists
2. Gökçe Karasu - Desende Işık ve Gölge
3. Nazım Mehmet - Desende İnsan Figürü
4. Vedat Özsoy - Desen Eğitimi Niçin Gereklidir?
5. Adnan Tepecik - Desen
6. Bünyamin Balamir - Sanatın Sesinde Hayat
Course Objectives
The course aims to develop students' visual perception, drawing skills, artistic creativity, and talents through drawing exercises. To achieve this, students are encouraged to recognize the characteristics and aesthetic qualities of various objects and the human figure, integrating them into their work. Furthermore, the course aims to lay the groundwork for accurately identifying and interpreting objects, enabling students to apply these skills in their future design fields.
Course Outcomes
1. Explains the basic terminology, drawing elements such as line and tonal value, and theoretical framework of the art of drawing through visual and written sources.
2. Uses drawing tools and materials, such as pencils, charcoal, and erasers, at a basic level and with correct technique in order to transfer observation processes onto paper.
3. Transforms observed natural objects, everyday objects, and figures into original drawing studies at a basic level through a perceptual process.
4. Applies composition principles such as ratio, proportion, perspective, and the balance between positive and negative space in drawings within an aesthetic unity.
Tentative Course Plan
*The following weekly plan and topics may vary depending on the year and semester of the course:

Week 1
Drawing Knowledge — Elements That Constitute Drawing: Explanation of the technical rules in drawing through schematization. Introduction, explanation of the course plan, and information about the tools and materials to be used. Emphasis on the importance of seeing and being able to perceive, and explanation of the related learning outcome.

Week 2
Elements That Constitute Drawing: Line
Wooden cube; awareness of light, dark, and medium line values. Expressing the different characteristics of every object in nature through line. Natural material: line values, awareness of the forms of artificial and natural objects.

Week 3
Tonal Value in Drawing
Mechanical object: studying objects through line and tonal value.
Natural object: studying objects through line and tonal value.

Week 4
Texture in Drawing
Composition of a wooden cube and fabric: recognizing the textural and visual differences of different materials.
Composition including different objects.

Week 5
Point, Line, Tonal Value, and Texture in Drawing
Object studies in drawing: line values, textural differences, giving volume through tonal value, and awareness of the forms of artificial and natural objects.

Week 6
Point, Line, Tonal Value, and Texture in Drawing
Copper vessel: line values, textural differences, giving volume according to the effect of light, and awareness of the forms of artificial and natural objects.

Week 7
Female torso and bust: surface perception through an anatomical approach. Line values, textural differences, giving volume through shading, and awareness of the forms of artificial and natural objects.

Week 8
Composition in Drawing
Types of composition are examined and related studies are carried out. Open and closed composition types are applied with a male torso and surrounding objects.

Week 9
Positive and Negative Space in Drawing
Through a female-male torso composition. Object-space relationship. Arrangement of positive and negative space effects.

Week 10
Perspective in Drawing: Spaces of the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations
Perspective study through interior drawing. Perspective knowledge is provided.

Week 11
Transparency in Drawing, Perception of Space and Distance through Tonal Gradations
Application of dark-light and light-shadow values based on an object and glass composition. Perception and concept.

Week 12
Composition with multiple objects; line values, textural differences, giving volume through shading, and developing awareness of the application of plastic elements and aesthetic principles within the scope of drawing.
