Visual Communication Design
Providing information on the concepts of communication, visual communication, design, communication design, and visual communication design. Introducing the various fields covered by visual communication design, along with professional insights into the discipline, including key areas such as graphic design, advertising, copywriting, photography, and illustration. The course will also introduce important designers, graphic designers, advertisers, copywriters, photographers, and illustrators working in the field. Additionally, students will be provided with useful reference materials, including books, articles, periodicals, and online resources such as font libraries, color matchers, photography websites, portfolio platforms, advertising archives, design networks, and award-winning designs. The course will also cover contemporary approaches and applications in the field of visual communication design.

To inform students about the Visual Communication Design Department and the formation process of this discipline. To introduce the disciplines included in Visual Communication Design, to examine the leading representatives and works of different disciplines within the field of visual communication design, to examine the expectations and professional practices of designer candidates. To examine current approaches and practices in the field of visual communication design through examples. To provide students with a theoretical background in the field of visual communication design. Based on this knowledge, to enable students to gain the competence to analyze and evaluate studies, applications and works in the field of visual communication design.
1. Defines the basic concepts and theories in the fields of communication, visual communication, and design.
2. Explains the characteristics, functions, and technical limitations of communication design in different multimedia environments.
3. Interprets communication design concepts and examples within the context of aesthetic values.
4. Relates symbols, messages, and signs used in visual communication within the framework of universal visual culture.

Assignment: Students are asked to select 3 successful and 3 unsuccessful design examples from one of the design websites in the bibliography assigned to them for the following week, and to upload these examples to the weekly assignment folder opened on the distance learning system the following week.
Important: The files for this assignment must be uploaded to the distance learning system before the midterm evaluation.

WEEK 7
Presentation: Students’ presentations on visual communication designers
Students individually present the assigned visual communication designer and their works through a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation.
The presentation must include:
1. A short biography with at least one photograph of the designer
2. The designer’s works and fields of activity
3. The presenting student’s individual verbal opinions about the designer’s works
The student presenting during the day must upload the presentation to the relevant weekly presentation submission folder on the GİT 106 page at uzak.etu.edu.tr by the end of the day.
Lecture: How is design criticism conducted and why is it important?
Students are expected to make positive or negative verbal critiques of successful and unsuccessful design examples. All students are required to participate in this activity.

All students are expected to make positive or negative verbal critiques of successful and unsuccessful design examples. All students are required to participate in this activity.
The student who will give a critique must verbally defend one of their own designs.
The student presenting during the day must upload the presentation to the relevant weekly presentation submission folder on the GİT 106 page at uzak.etu.edu.tr by the end of the day. Presentations must not exceed 15 minutes. Presentation submission deadline: 24.02.2025, 23:59.
WEEK 8
Presentation: Students’ presentations on visual communication designers
Students continue the individual 10-minute PowerPoint presentations, started in Week 7, in which they present the assigned visual communication designer and their works.

WEEK 10
Final Assignment: Critical Writing on a Design Product — Successful and Unsuccessful Design
Students are expected to select 1 successful and 1 unsuccessful design. These 2 selected designs must be approved by the course instructor. They will be selected by the instructor from the sets of 3 examples uploaded by the student to the distance learning system in Week 5.
Students are expected to write a 500-word critique/review for each design: 500 words for the successful design and 500 words for the unsuccessful design. The critique must include one image of each selected design and be submitted in PDF format.
Students must examine/critique the selected designs in terms of typography, use of color, use of visual design principles and elements, the target audience of the design, and the success of its implementation.
The instructor conducts one verbal critique in class as an example.
