Course Description
The history of design before and after the Industrial Revolution, the impact of 19th-century modern art movements on graphic design, and the examination of art and design movements related to Modernism and Postmodernism.

Course Objectives
Analyzing the history of graphic design through examples to provide a comprehensive understanding of the evolution of contemporary graphic design.
Course Outcomes
1. Understands the fundamental concepts, periods, and evolution of graphic design history theoretically.
2. Analyzes major graphic design movements and trends within their historical contexts.
3. Evaluates the approaches of prominent theorists and artists in graphic design history.
4. Examines the effects of cultural, social, and technological transformations on graphic design theoretically.
5. Discusses the development of typography, color, composition, and other visual elements throughout history.
6. Relates universal symbols of graphic design to historical examples.
7. Interprets different aesthetic perspectives of various periods in relation to social dynamics.
8. Critically evaluates significant works and applications in graphic design history.
9. Investigates the diverse and evolving nature of graphic design’s visual language in both local and universal contexts through historical examples.
10. Develops the ability to apply theoretical knowledge of graphic design history to contemporary design practices.
11. Compares graphic design approaches from different historical periods, analyzing similarities and differences.
12. Presents analyses and interpretations of graphic design history effectively, supported by critical thinking skills.
Tentative Course Plan
Week 1: Distribution and discussion of the course plan, introduction.
Week 2: Art Movements Leading to Modernism and Introduction to Graphic Design Movements: Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau (French, English, and Glasgow School), American Art Nouveau
Week 3: Austrian Secession, German Jugendstil, and Introduction to Modernism
Week 4: Quiz (online)
Week 5: Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Constructivism (joint session for both sections at 13:30)
Week 6: Bauhaus, De Stijl, Art Deco
Week 7: New Typography and International Typographic Style
Week 8: New York School, Corporate Identity, and Visual Design
Week 9: Graphic Design in the 1950s and 1960s, Graphic Design in Turkey
Week 10: Postmodernism and Graphic Design
Week 11: Graphic Design in Turkey, Graphic Design after 2000
Week 12: Final Assignment Submission
