Our goal in this course is to gain a critical understanding of architecture, urbanism, and design in the contemporary period through the texts of architects and the discourses they produce/share through different media (i.e. discursive formations). Discussions and exercises aim to help students determine their own position in design and develop an understanding of both architectural history, theory and practice, and their relationship with design.
1. To develop an understanding of architectural history and theory, and how they relate to design.
2. To be aware of contemporary ideas and architectural practices since the late 20th century.
3. To discuss key issues in contemporary architectural thought and practices.
4. To develop an intellectual opinion and personal reflection on the contemporary architectural discourse.
5. To develop skills for critical thinking, quality research, and clear communication through readings, writings, class discussions and presentations, group collaborations, and a (media) project.
