Course Description
Introduction to Materials Science, atomic structure, interatomic bonding in solids, crystal structures of solids, crystallographic directions and planes, defects in solids, point, line and plane defects, diffusion and diffusion mechanisms, mechanical properties of metals, dislocations and strength enhancement mechanisms, ductile and brittle fracture, fatigue, creep, phase diagrams, binary phase diagrams, iron-carbon phase diagram, metal alloys, ceramics, polymers and composite materials: properties and applications.

Course Objectives
Learning the basic components of materials science, learning the connection between microstructure-property-performance-manufacturing, learning material types and material properties.

Week 5: Propagation and propagation mechanisms in solids
Week 6: Mechanical Properties, Stress-Strain Diagram
Week 7: Dislocations and Strength Enhancement Mechanisms
Week 8: Brittle and Ductile Fracture, Fatigue and Creep
Week 9: Phase Diagrams, Conformal Systems
Week 10: Tectic Systems and Fe-C Phase Diagram
