Course Description
This course will give a historical review of the field; concepts of normal and abnormal behavior; theoretical approaches to abnormal behavior; examination of the assessment, etiology and treatment of different types of psychopathologies as proposed in the DSM-V classification system. Contemporary and legal issues in abnormal behavior will be introduced.

Course Objectives
1. Have knowledge on the etiology, symptoms and treatment of various psychological disorders covered in the current classification systems,
2. Understand past and current treatment of psychological disorders,
3. Describe the research methods employed in investigating psychological disorders,
4. Appreciate the process of assessment of mental illness and the techniques employed in the assessment of personality and intelligence,
5. Understand the various theoretical perspectives defining the etiology of psychological disorders from biological, learning, sociocultural, psychodynamic ,behavioral and cognitive perspectives,
6. Have an appreciation of the inner side of psychopathology, the laws protecting the rights of the mentally ill and current issues in this area.
Course Outcomes
1. Recognize the psychological disorders seen in adulthood and have information about their diagnosis criteria.
2. Know the historical development of psychological disorders’ classification and current theories.
3. Explain the etiology, clinical manifestations, treatment and prognosis of psychological disorders.
4. Understand the mental illness assessment process and techniques used in personality and intelligence assessment,
5. Understand various theoretical perspectives that describe the etiology of psychological disorders from biological, learning, sociocultural, psychodynamic, behavioral, and cognitive perspectives.
6. Gain insight into psychopathology, laws protecting the rights of the mentally ill, and current issues in this area.
