This course aims to convey to students the process of the Ottoman Empire from its foundation to the end of the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. Through article presentations and discussions, it aims to provide students with a thorough understanding of the historical developments as well as the fundamental issues discussed in historiography within the scope of this period. Thus, it is among the goals to provide students with a holistic view of the Ottoman history until the end of the classical period.
1. To learn the establishment process of the Ottoman Empire and the discussions in historiography about this process.
2. To learn the expansion process of the Ottoman Empire and its relationship with the Balkan geography.
3. To understand the developments leading to the interregnum and how the recovery period took place afterwards.
4. To establish the connection between the Fatih period and the conquest of Istanbul and the establishment of a centralized empire.
5. To learn the changes in developments in Europe with the period of Suleiman the Magnificent.
6. To understand the administrative, social and economic concepts and structures that characterize the classical period.
Week 1: Introduction to the course, explanation of goals and expectations; a general overview of Ottoman history

Week 4: From Mehmed II to Fatih; article discussion
Week 5: The establishment of a centralized state from a principality to an empire; article discussion
Week 6: The reign of Bayezid II; article discussion
Week 7: The period of Selim I and the East; Midterm exam
Week 8: Suleiman the Magnificent and Europe; article discussion
Week 9: Suleiman the Magnificent and the Ottoman world; article discussion
