Turkish Language and Literature Undergraduate Program

In this course, individuals, works, schools, communities and groups in contemporary Turkish literature will be introduced. Turkish novels and stories written since the 1960s will be examined from a socio-historical perspective.

The aim of this course is to introduce the modern Turkish novel and story written after 1960.

1. Studies the post-1960 poetry movements in Turkey.
2. Familiar with the major poets of this period and learn to read and analyse their works.
3. Familiar with modern Turkish novels and short stories written in Turkey since 1960.
4. Familiar with the leading novelists and short-story writers of this period, and learn to read and analyse their works.

Week 1: Course introduction, responsibilities; a portrait of Turkish politics and literature from 1960 onwards; literary movements
Week 2: The ‘Second New’ poetry movement and its influences; general characteristics of the post-1960 Turkish novel; existentialist literature; Oğuz Atay – Dangerous Games
Week 3: Yusuf Atılgan – *Aylak Adam*; the poetry of Özdemir Asaf
Week 4: Yaşar Kemal – *Yer Demir Gök Bakır*; the poetry of Ataol Behramoğlu and Gülten Akın
Week 5: Tarık Buğra – *Küçük Ağa*; the poetry of İsmet Özel
Week 6: Adalet Ağaoğlu – *Ölmeye Yatmak*; general characteristics of the modern Turkish short story; the short stories of Rasim Özdenören; the poetry circle of *Mavera* magazine
