This course examines the components of the digestive system, their macroscopic and microscopic structures, the mechanisms of digestion, the biochemical destruction of macromolecules taken with nutrition and their processing within the cell, the regulation of the digestive system and digestive mechanisms, the definition of metabolism, the regulation of metabolism, hormonal control mechanisms important in the regulation of metabolism, and the factors that change/affect metabolism.

This course teaches the structural (anatomical, histological) and functional (physiological) features of the digestive system's organs and the functioning and control of metabolism.
1. Recognizes the structures of the digestive system components and shows them on models and cadavers.
2. Lists the functions of the digestive system components.
3. Explains the general mechanisms in the digestion of food.
4. Defines the characteristics of digestion in the mouth, stomach and small intestine.
5. Explains the role of exocrine secretions of the liver, gallbladder and pancreas in digestion.
6. Lists the absorption mechanisms.
7. Defines the molecular components of protein, amino acid, lipid, lipoprotein, carbohydrate and nucleotide metabolisms.
8. Explains the mechanisms and factors effective in the control and regulation of metabolism.
9. Uses automatic pipette and spectrophotometer.
10. Measures the levels of fructosamine, total protein and lipid peroxidation in healthy and diabetic human serum.
11. Measures the basal metabolic rate
12. Applies surgical sutures on a model
13. Applies a nasogastric tube on a model
