Course Description
In this course, poet biographies, which stand out as the most distinctive prose genre of Ottoman Divan literature, will be evaluated comparatively according to centuries and through sample texts, and their aspects that can be a source for the cultural and artistic life of the period will be discussed.

Course Objectives
Focusing on biography writing, one of the most important sources of Turkish literature, we will evaluate the content and style of poet biographies, mainly through examples.
Course Outcomes
1. Gains an idea about the Ottoman biography tradition.
2. Makes evaluations about the content and style of Turkish poet biographies through examples.

Week 1: Introduction, introduction to the course, biography writing in Islamic culture, biography tradition in the Ottomans and Turkish poet biographies
Week 2: Biographical sources of Turkish literature
Week 3: 16th century Turkish poet biographies and examples
Week 4: 17th century Turkish poet biographies and examples
Week 5: 18th century Turkish poet biographies and examples
Week 6: 19th-20th century Turkish poet biographies, transition to literary history and examples
Week 7: City histories and biography
Week 8: Formal Development in Anatolian Field Turkish Biographies
Week 9: Biographie prefaces
Week 10: Addendums in the biographie tradition
Week 11: Biographie and modern biography
Week 12: Views of Divan Literature in Light of Biographies
