Turkish Language and Literature Postgraduate Program

In our literature, there have been many notable examples of the letter, memoir and interview genres that developed after the Tanzimat. There are many examples, starting from Namık Kemal's letters, Abdülhak Hamid's memoirs, to Tanpınar's, Mehmet Kaplan's and Orhan Okay's letters and memoirs, and Ruşen Eşref's literary interviews collected in Dliyor ki. This course will focus on the most well-known examples of the genre.

To talk about the essay, letter, memoir, interview, theater genres and their importance in Turkish and World literature; to read, examine and evaluate certain important examples of each genre.

1. Learn the essay, letter, memoir, interview, and theater genres in Turkish and World literature.
2. Read and analyze important examples of each genre.

Week 1: What is an essay? The genre will be evaluated with examples from world and Turkish literature. The similarities and differences between them will be discussed with students in class.
Week 2: Essay genre - continued
Week 3: What is a letter? Examples of the genre in Turkish and world literature will be read, and appropriate examples will be selected and critiqued in class as a written text.
Week 4: Letter genre - continued
Week 5: What is a memoir? Students will each bring a memoir example and examine it in class.
Week 6: Memoir genre - continued
Week 7: What is an interview? Its characteristics and principles. Similarities and differences with examples from world and Turkish literature.
Week 8: Interview genre - continued
Week 9: What is theater? Its characteristics and principles. Its development and changes from the beginning to the present will be evaluated. Students will each choose a theater text and critique it in writing.
