General Information

The Department of English Language and Literature was established in 2010. The English Language and Literature Undergraduate Program, which is carried out by the Department, accepted its first students in the fall semester of the 2011-2012 academic year and gave its first graduates at the end of the summer semester of the 2014-2015 academic year. The program is conducted in 100% English, except for non-field courses.Lectures are given through lectures, seminars, class discussions and student presentations. The evaluation of the course is based on midterm exams, term papers, in-class and out-of-class assignments and averages of certain percentages.Students are encouraged to participate in extra-departmental activities such as student clubs. In addition to the lectures, the department invites various speakers from other universities to provide students with a rich perspective on literature.


Program Educational Objectives

1.To conduct scientific research on literary and cultural works written in English.
2.To share the findings and information obtained as a result of the studies carried out with students, academics and society.
3. To build bridges between cultures through translations, especially literary translations.
4. To provide students with one year of work experience in different sectors related to the field until graduation within the scope of the Joint Education Program.
5. To educate students who are capable of analysis, who can transform knowledge into value and share it with others, who can internalize the universal, multicultural and humanitarian values that literature brings, who can express themselves both orally and in writing in English and in their mother tongue, who have developed critical and versatile thinking skills, who can both teach English in the best way when necessary and who can find a place for themselves in non-educational fields and sectors.


Degree Earned

Students who successfully complete this program are awarded a Bachelor's Degree in English Language and Literature.


Level of Degree Earned

The English Language and Literature program is a Bachelor's degree program, classified as Level 6 in the Turkish Higher Education Qualifications Framework (TYYÇ).


Requirements and Rules of the Degree Earned

At least a total of 130 National Credits / 250 ECTS (+ 24 ECTS Common Education) must be earned for graduation. Other rules that students are subject to are determined within the framework of TOBB University of Economics and Technology "Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations" and "Directive on the Principles of Education and Training of English Preparatory Program".


Admission Requirements

Our program accepts students with full scholarship, 50% scholarship and paid status with the LIL-1 score of the LYS exam conducted by ÖSYM every year.However, a student studying in an equivalent program in Turkey or abroad can apply for a transfer to our program in line with the quotas to be determined. This process is carried out in accordance with the regulations regarding student admission. Students coming from abroad within the scope of student exchange programs approved by the University and defined by an agreement can also be students in the program for a certain period of time. International students are admitted to this program within the framework of the "Directive on Admission of Students from Abroad" with internationally recognized exam results such as SAT, ACT or according to their secondary education graduation grades.


Recognition of Prior Learning

By completing secondary (high school) education, it is required to get enough points in the appropriate score category in the national central placement exam. Students who are newly enrolled in the program (if any) may request exemption from the courses they have taken and succeeded in the higher education institution they were previously enrolled in, in order to count them instead of their obligations in the undergraduate diploma program they are accepted. If the content of the course taken at another institution is appropriate to the content of the course given at TOBB ETU and approved by the relevant Dean's Office, the student may be exempted from this course.


Examinations, Assessment and Evaluation

Exams, measurement and evaluation are carried out on the basis of TOBB University of Economics and Technology "Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations". Students' achievements are measured and evaluated through methods such as written, oral and quizzes; essay writing and application assignments; presentations; keeping reading journals and observing their participation in in-class discussions, which are planned by taking into account the content of each course and the knowledge, skills, experience and behaviors that students are expected to acquire.The success of the student in the course is determined by the relevant instructor accordingly. For each course taken by the students, one of the end-of-semester grades is assigned by the relevant instructor within the periods specified in the academic calendar. The grading system to be used is determined by the Senate.

Graduation Requirements

In order to graduate from this program, students are required to successfully complete all the courses and practices required by the program and the Joint Education obligations and all courses that are not counted as another course instead of another course within the maximum period of study according to the provisions of TOBB University of Economics and Technology "Undergraduate Education and Examination Regulations"; to have earned at least a total of 130 National Credits / 250 ECTS (+ 24 ECTS Joint Education); to have a GPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00.

Graduates of the English Language and Literature Program have the opportunity to be employed in the public and private sectors in many fields such as education, translation, tourism, law, international relations, banking, media and management.
