Victorian Charles Dickens, the Brontës, George Eliot, Elizabeth Gaskell, Thomas Hardy and many others It is the golden age of the English novel with its important authors. The rise of the middle class and strict moral codes, industrialization, economic growth, social reforms, colonialism, advancing technology, science, as well as religious conservatism and The Victorian era, associated with mysticism, is a period of transition and a harbinger of the complexity of the modern world. Victorian novels are also important sources reflecting the spirit of the 19th century. In this course, the socio- cultural, economic and political background, different types of novels and the Victorian novel writing tradition The main themes will be analyzed and discussed through three representative novels.

This course aims to teach the political, philosophical and literary characteristics and movements of the period. Students will understand the foundations of the British novel.
1. To have knowledge about the social, political and economic characteristics of the Victorian Era
2. To learn the main themes of the writers of the period
3. Compare the writing styles of different authors
4. To see the reflection of women's issues, industrial revolution, colonization, social reforms on literature

Week 3: Realism & Different types of novels and examples: bildungsroman, sensational novels, gothic romances
