This course will examine postcolonial literature on identity (race, gender, class, sexuality), representation and power. and how it critiques colonialism, imperialism and globalization. Students will also explore the complexity of hybrid identities, cultural hybridity, and how these how they have been shaped by histories of resistance. Ultimately, the course will focus on Europe colonialism as a way of capturing the experiences of those living both within and beyond colonialism. It is designed to express a postcolonial and decolonized perspective.

This course aims to enable students to explore the social, cultural and political impact of colonialism and the struggle for independence and self-determination through close reading and analysis of a range of texts, including fiction, poetry, drama, non-fiction and cultural aesthetics.
