Ottoman diplomatic procedures differ from modern diplomatic protocol and historical European court practices. There are differences in the ceremonies, greeting and farewell ceremonies, gift-giving procedures, selection of ambassadors, their ranks, their retinues and negotiation terms. Since Ottoman international law includes a large part of Islamic law, interstate relations should be evaluated within this framework. In light of all this information, the course includes not only Ottoman diplomacy but also the application of Ottoman international law. The course is designed to cover the first period of the establishment of permanent embassies starting from the Classical period.
