The course aims to provide a foundation for students to analyze the city of Ankara and examine its urban development.
1. Understanding the relationship between cinema, literature, and architecture (KNOWLEDGE).
2. Utilizing fundamental sources from disciplines closely related to architecture while conducting urban analysis (SKILL).
3. Interpreting and evaluating Ankara’s urban and architectural transformation from its designation as the capital to the present, along with its evolving social and cultural structure, as well as the different architectural styles it has encompassed throughout various historical periods (SKILL).
Week 1: Introduction to the Course – Scope, objectives, and expectations
Week 2: Designing the Modern Capital – An overview of Ankara’s urban planning history from the Jansen Plan to the present
Week 3: Urban Analysis Field Trip I – Ankara Train Station, Youth Park, Ulus, Parliament, Bruno Taut Buildings
Week 4: Urban Analysis Field Trip II – Ministries District and Parliament Axis
Week 5: Urban Perception and Spatial Analysis – Discussion of Kevin Lynch’s The Image of the City and Ankara’s urban image
Week 6: Presentation on the Ministries District of Ankara – Planning processes and spatial transformation
Week 7: Bruno Taut and Ankara – Taut’s works in Ankara and his contributions to modern architecture
Week 8: Literary Representations of Ankara I – Ankara’s presence in literature and narratives
Week 9: Literary Representations of Ankara II – Socio-cultural transformation of Ankara through literary works
Week 10: Spatial Transformation in Ankara – Urban sprawl, informal settlements, urban renewal, and a critique of the city through Agoraphobia
Week 11: Ankara’s New Urban Axes – Çukurambar, Eskişehir Road, Oran, Turan Güneş Boulevard, North Ankara, İncek, and newly developing areas
Week 12: Research Presentations – Student presentations on Ankara’s spatial and historical development.
