Course Description
In this course, historical development of linguistics and the main linguistic schools will be briefly explained and the differences between linguistics and traditional grammar will be identified.

Course Objectives
The aim of this course is to cover concepts and topics such as the history of linguistics, the place of Saussure's structuralism in 20th century linguistics, Chomsky's concept of generative grammar, functional grammar, different research areas in linguistics, theoretical linguistics, pragmatics, cognitive linguistics and sociolinguistics.

1. Learns the scope, history and methods of linguistics.
2. Learns the important names and concepts related to the field.

Week 1: Definition and determination of the scope of linguistics
Week 2: History and methods of linguistics
Week 3: F. de Saussure and binary oppositions in language within his framework
Week 4: Trends and developments in linguistics after F. de Saussure
Week 5: Prague School of Linguistics and Features of Functional Phonetics
Week 6: French School of Language
Week 7: Copenhagen School of Linguistics
Week 8: American Structuralism
Week 9: Noam Chomsky and linguistic theories
Week 10: Noam Chomsky and linguistic theories
Week 11: Generative Transformational Grammar Theory
Week 12: Review of the general features of linguistics
