The course covers the basic concepts and categories of law and their historical and intellectual origins, schools of legal thought, origins and development of Continental European and Anglo-American legal systems, the development of Turkish law from Ottoman modernization to the present, and the application of legal rules in general.

The aim of the course is to provide students with a solid theoretical foundation in the discipline of law by comprehending the basic concepts and categories of law and their historical and intellectual origins. In addition, it is to help students understand the basic views of different schools of legal thought and to evaluate the development of Continental European and Anglo-American legal systems comparatively. The course aims to enable students to comprehend the development of Turkish law from Ottoman modernization to the present day and to analyze the relationship between legal systems by learning the basic principles of the application of legal rules.
1. Be familiars the basic concepts and categories of law and to explains their historical and intellectual origins.
2. Compares the basic views of different schools of legal thought.
3. Evaluates the development of Continental European and Anglo-American legal systems comparatively and determines the main differences between them.
4. Be familiars the developmental stages of Turkish law from the Ottoman modernization process to the present day.
5. Explains the application of legal rules, the hierarchy of norms and the principles of legal interpretation, and evaluates them in the context of different legal systems.
Week 1: Social rules in general, their origin and function. The interaction between legal rules and other social rules and the criteria for the distinction between them.
Week 2:: Schools of law: Natural law, legal positivism and historical school of law.
Week 3: Introduction to the basic concepts and categories of private law.
Week 4: Introduction of the basic concepts and categories of private law (Continued).

Week 6: England / The emergence of the Common Law.
Week 7: Development of law during Ottoman modernization.
