Course Description
This course is comprised of a systematic explanation of the substantive norms specifically regulating various fields of public international law. In the framework of this course, the basic concepts and principles of the norms on peaceful settlement of disputes, the law of international responsibility, the law of armed conflicts, humanitarian law, and international criminal law. The legal norms on the law of the sea, air law, space law, and international environmental law are examined in context, and their effect in the Turkish legal system is analysed..

Course Objectives
Aim of the course is acquire knowledge on the fundamental concepts of international law and to understand the legal roots of contemporary international conflicts, and accordingly find solutions for such disputes.
Course Outcomes
1. Discuss the content of substantive norms of public international law in light of the relevant international treaties.
2. Draw concrete conclusions regarding responsibility arising from violations of international law.
3. Critically evaluate and compare various international courts and tribunals empowered to interpret and apply international law.
4. Acquire the ability to bring legal arguments in case studies using the theory and practice of international law concerning these specific fields of international law.
5. Acquire the ability to settle disputes regarding the delimitation of maritime jurisdictions; discuss the legal grounds of contemprorary international conflicts on the law of the sea.
6. Able to interpret and implement the principles and rules on the prohibition of use of force and self-defense.
7. Critically discuss the successes and failures of the United Nations Security Council.
8. Elaborate on the rules regarding environmental protection in international law and their effect in domestic law within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
9. Develop their analytical thinking on issues concerning international law, develop skills to follow contemporary developments, and discuss hot topics in English.

Week 1: Fundamental Principles Governing International Relations Peaceful Settlement of International Disputes: Diplomatic and legal methods of dispute settlement
Week 2: Law of responsibility I: The nature and forms of international responsibility
Week 3: Law of responsibility II: Issues of admissibility and the law on international responsibility
Week 4: War, peace, security I: Countermeasures and sanctions, UN Sanctions and collective security, use of force and international legal order
Week 5: War, peace, security II: Law of Armed Conflicts
Week 6: War, peace, security III: International Humanitarian Law
Week 7: War, peace, security IV: International Criminal Law
Week 8: Law of the Sea I
Week 9: Law of the Sea II
Week 10: Air Law and Space Law
Week 11: International Environmental Law
Week 12: General evaluations and practical applications
