Course Description
This course examines the fundamental principles of environmental law, national and international environmental regulations, the legal dimensions of environmental policies, and legal solutions to environmental issues. The course covers topics such as climate change, biodiversity conservation, environmental impact assessment, air and water pollution, waste management, sustainable development, and liability regimes in environmental law. Additionally, key judicial decisions and international treaties that have shaped environmental law will be analyzed to enhance students' legal analysis and critical thinking skills.

Course Objectives
The objective of this course is to enable students to understand the fundamental principles of environmental law and develop legal solutions to environmental issues. Students will be able to analyze the legal framework of environmental policies, gain knowledge of environmental crimes and sanctions, and follow current developments in national and international environmental law. Additionally, they will develop the ability to evaluate the interaction between environmental law and policies, and examine concepts such as sustainable development and climate justice from a legal perspective.
Course Outcomes
1. Explain the fundamental principles of environmental law and the legal basis of environmental policies.
2. Analyze national and international environmental legislation and environmental treaties.
3. Evaluate environmental issues from a legal perspective and propose legal solutions.
4. Examine key judicial decisions in environmental law and analyze their impact on legal practice.
5. Assess concepts such as sustainable development, climate justice, and environmental liability from a legal standpoint.
6. Follow developments in environmental law and interpret current legal regulations.
Tentative Course Plan
Week 1: Introduction to Environmental Law and Fundamental Concepts, Philosophical foundations and evolution of environmental law, Principles of environmental law: Precautionary Principle, Global environmental issues and legal responses
Week 2: Climate Change and National Policies, UNFCCC process, Kyoto Protocol, and Paris Agreement, Principles of environmental law: Polluter Pays Principle, Turkey’s climate change policies
Week 3: Biodiversity and Natural Resources Law, Treaties for biodiversity protection (CBD, CITES, Nagoya Protocol), Principles of environmental law: Sustainable Development, Conservation of endangered species in Turkey
Week 4: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), EIA and SEA in national and international law, Principles of environmental law: Right to Participation and Access to Information, EIA implementation in Turkey and transboundary environmental impacts
Week 5: Air and Water Pollution Control Law, Legal regulations on air and water pollution control, Principles of environmental law: Transboundary Harm Principle, Air and water pollution management in Turkey
Week 6: Waste Management and Circular Economy Law, Basel Convention and transboundary movement of hazardous waste, Principles of environmental law: Prevention Principle, Waste management and circular economy policies in Turkey
Week 7: Practical Workshop, Case studies and real-world applications of environmental law
Week 8: Environmental Responsibility and Sanctions, Concepts of environmental damage and liabilityPrinciples of environmental law: Polluter Pays Principle, Environmental crimes and sanctions in Turkey

Week 11: Judicial Decisions Analysis and Innovative Approaches, Artificial intelligence and environmental monitoring, Principles of environmental law: Technological Innovation and Environmental Responsibility, General assessment of selected judicial decisions
Week 12: Final Review and Case Law Discussion, Evaluation of key judicial decisions in environmental law, Current trends and future developments in environmental law
